Patuxent Refuge Center
1935-Present
Patuxent Refuge was established in 1935 as a research center for wildlife. It claimed more land in the 90s right after Fort Meade let go of the land.
Just like the Western Maryland Scenic line. A&CR had already established corridor when AL&P existed. So it was no problem when restoring the route.
How can a railroad
traverse this area?
Since the railroad was established as Annapolis, Laurel & Patuxent in 1857, the line was there before the refuge. The line is levelled though, even before the refuge came in.
The tracks run along beside the transmission lines which makes it easier for them to get power for their catenaries much like the NEC (PRR).
All engines must whistle when approaching the edge of the property so they don't distract the wildlife.
